By Stephen Tanzer
Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar (Issue #115, July/August 2004)
(Penfolds Wines Chardonnay Yattarna Adelaide Hills) ($65) Pale, bright color. Leesy aromas of lemon, orange, butter, spices and smoke; rather Meursault-like. Then dense, sappy and concentrated but quite dry, even a bit youthfully austere. Hints of pineapple, grapefruit and orange, complicated by dusty thyme and sage. Oily but not at all syrupy. Offers impressive mid-palate energy for Australian chardonnay and finishes with an edge of acidity. But this is still a bit youthfully disjointed, with its sweetness and fruit still rather withdrawn. 89(+?) points |
