Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar (Issue #133, July/August 2007)
(Bodegas Marques de Murrieta Castillo Ygay Gran Reserva Especial Rioja) Dark red. Alluring aromas of redcurrant, cherry, cigar box, licorice and underbrush, with a light touch of vanilla. A silky midweight with expansive red fruit and musky herb flavors framed and supported by bright acidity and dusty tannins. Finishes suave and sweet, with excellent breadth and persistence. This has the balance to cellar but is utterly delicious now. 91 points |

WA: The famed 1998 Castillo Ygay Gran Reserva plays it close to the vest. Its dense ruby color is followed by notions of cedar, spice box, and wood as well as elegant, sweet cherry, and dusty, loamy soil notes. It does not possess the intensity, power, or expansiveness of the 2001 Reserva. This elegant 1998 should drink well for 7-10 years. Importer: Paramount Brands, Port Chester, NY; tel. (914) 937-5007 |

WS: Plump, but with good structure, this traditional red shows cherry, plum, spice and tobacco flavors that are beginning to mature, yet remain fresh on the finish. Pretty spice notes linger. Drink now through 2010. –TM |
